What is an M3U playlist? IPTV M3U explained

M3U is one of the two common ways to connect an IPTV player to your subscription. Here's what it really is, how it differs from an Xtream Codes login and which one to use.

An M3U playlist is a plain-text file format that lists stream URLs one after another — it's one of the oldest and simplest ways to distribute a channel list, and it predates IPTV itself (it started out as a music playlist format). In IPTV, providers generate an M3U file (or a dynamic M3U URL) containing every channel included in your subscription, and your player app reads that link to build your channel list.

Comparison

M3U vs Xtream Codes login

M3U playlist

  • ✓A single URL that contains your entire channel list
  • ✓Paste it once into the player's “M3U URL” field
  • ✓Simple, but the URL itself contains your login details
  • ✓No separate EPG unless the provider includes one

Xtream Codes login

  • ✓A portal URL plus a separate username and password
  • ✓A few more setup fields, but nothing sensitive sits in a single shareable link
  • ✓Usually includes EPG, catch-up and VOD metadata automatically
  • ✓The connection type TeleZest recommends by default

Ready to connect either way? See our setup guide for the exact configuration steps.
